TLC Distribution in Progress
The
largest-ever notebook computer distribution will coincide with Welcome
Weekend activities. It is scheduled at the following times in the
NMU Superior Dome through the remainder of the week: 1-8
p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26; and
from 9 a.m.
to 9 p.m.
Friday, Aug. 27 and 9 a.m. to
7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28. Spurred
by increasing enrollment, NMU will issue about 6,300 new notebook
computers to incoming freshmen. Nearly 5,200 returning students
will exchange their two-year old machines for new models.
According
to Gavin Leach (Finance
and Administration), the distribution process has been streamlined
each year since the rollout of the Teaching, Learning and Communication
(TLC) initiative in 2000.
“Every year we
look at how we can serve the students better and make the process
more efficient on our end as well,” Leach said. “It takes two-and-a-half
minutes for new freshmen from the ID check to the point that they
collect their computers and it takes five to seven minutes for those
exchanging computers. From there, it takes about 35 minutes to do
computer setup and registration, and to load the software and go
over the wireless capability.”
