Course
Repeat Policy
If you are repeating
a course this semester, please notify the Student Service Center,
C.B. Hedgcock,
room 2201,
906-227-1221, or e-mail
records@nmu.edu so your record can be properly adjusted. NMU
counts the most recent grade in a course even if that grade is lower
than the previous one. If you are receiving financial aid and are
repeating a course in which you received a grade other than an F,
check with staff in the Financial Aid Office,
C.B. Hedgcock,
room 2107, 906-227-2327, to determine how the repeat will affect your
satisfactory academic progress.
While the university
allows almost any course to be repeated, if you have failed a course
two times at NMU, you must wait for one semester during the academic
year before taking the course for the third time. Additionally, you
must demonstrate to the head of the department offering the course
that the factors that contributed to poor performance have been
addressed and resolved.
|
|
Cybergrades
The university does not mail grade reports. Final grades will
be available online at
my.nmu.edu after
each semester. You can also access an unofficial
transcript and check your class schedule using
my.nmu.edu.

Over 1,800 students are enrolled in
Superior Edge.
Why has over 20% of NMU’s
student
body decided to be a part of this initiative?
Well, it could be because it is one-of-a-kind
nationwide, or it could be because it is on the cutting
edge of merging technology with its users.
The main reason that Superior Edge is sweeping
across the NMU campus is really quite simple.
It offers its participants a chance to not only
get recognized for the activities and endeavors they are
active with both in- and out-of-the-classroom, but it
also helps them to realize their potential and own
self-worth.
There are four
edges:
Citizenship, Diversity, Leadership, and Real World.
These edges each represent 100 hours of achievement in
volunteerism, diversity awareness, leadership
experience, and hands-on job experience.
Each edge allows a student to not only
participate in enriching activities, but it also
explores the impact the experiences have on themselves.
An added bonus is that each student also gets
officially recognized with a student enrichment
transcript.

All
parents of Northern students can sign up to join the
award-winning NMU Parent Partnership. This program features
regular
e-mail newsletters (or postal-mail copies when
necessary) from President Les Wong to parents that highlight
activities taking place on campus, discuss higher education
issues, and answer questions sent to Dr. Wong from parents about how and why
Northern operates the way it does. There is no cost to join the
Parent Partnership.
So, ask
your mom and dad if they’ve already signed up. If they haven’t, encourage them to do so. To register
for the Partnership, they can go to
www.nmu.edu/parents, click on the newsletter and fill out the brief sign-up
questionnaire. If your parents need to register by mail, they can
do so by writing to NMU Parent Partnership, Office of the President,
Northern Michigan University, 1401 Presque Isle Avenue, Marquette,
MI 49855. When signing up by mail, the information needed is
parent’s name, address and phone number, as well as your name and
NMU identification number.
If your
parents have signed up for the NMU Parent Partnership newsletter but
haven’t received any of the issues, there may be a firewall or
browser issue.
Suggest that they put the Parent Partnership e-mail address,
NMUPres@nmu.edu,
in their e-mail address book, which sometimes enables them to work
around such problems.

Laptop Distribution Dates
The Superior Dome
will be the distribution site for notebook computers which are
provided to all full-time NMU students as part of tuition and fees;
part-time students pay a rental fee. This year’s Dome
distribution will be Thursday
and Friday, Aug. 20-21.
During the week
of Aug. 10, a
complete TLC information package was sent to all full-time students
via their NMU e-mail account or, for incoming freshmen and transfer
students, via U.S. mail. The package
included an assigned computer pickup/exchange time and information
regarding computing services, registration and set up.
Distribution times and dates for students can be found at: https://microrepair.nmu.edu/4.1.1.php
To receive a computer, a student must be currently enrolled (tuition
paid or tuition payment plan selected) and registered for credit-earning
classes. Students must present a valid picture ID and sign a
computer use agreement. If the student is under 18, a parent or
legal guardian must sign the computer use agreement.
Assistance with
set up and registering the
computer will be available on-site. To receive help, students will
need their NMU (e-mail) user ID and password. First-time students
should have received a user ID and password at orientation. Students
who have lost or forgotten their user ID or password can go to
myuser.nmu.edu
on the Web, or contact the Help Desk,
helpdesk@nmu.edu,
227-2468, room 116, Learning Resource Center. The Help Desk will
have a booth in the Superior Dome during distribution.
A video that
demonstrates how to set up the notebook computer and register it to
NMU's network, and provides helpful hints for the care of the
computer will air on Charter Channel 20 from Aug. 20-31. It
will be shown at the bottom of the hour beginning at 9:30 a.m. every day, with the last
showing at 11:30 p.m.
Students who
cannot make their assigned time during the distribution will
need to go to the Micro Repair Office, located in the lower
level of the LRC, to pick up their computers. Micro Repair will
be open from 4-8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23, 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and
Friday, 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Occasionally an
error is made in the calculation or recording of a grade. If you
feel that a clerical error has been made in a winter or summer
grade, contact your instructor immediately.
If your instructor
agrees that there was an error made, the instructor will fill
out a change of grade form. The instructor will then submit the
form to the department head for review and signature. Once
reviewed and signed by the department head, the change of grade
form is forwarded to the college dean for final review and a
signature. The college dean will then forward the form to the
Registrar's Office for processing. This process can take
several days. If your grade does not get
corrected, contact your instructor. The Registrar's Office will not have any information
about your grade change until the completed form is received. When the
Registrar's Office receives the grade change, students will be able to
view the corrected grade on
my.nmu.edu. All forms received by the Registrar are uploaded to
my.nmu.edu daily.
Faculty must
submit grade changes for clerical errors to the Registrar’s
Office by the 15th working day of the semester (Monday, Sept. 15).
For more information on the grade change policy, please contact
the Registrar's Office.

Dear NMU
Students,
I
hope Northern Michigan University continues to be a
place that challenges you and helps you reach new
personal and educational heights. I have big
expectations for each NMU student. I’m always very proud
to tout your accomplishments each year when I speak with
alumni, legislators, prospective parents and students,
and community members.
Please take advantage of the full
range of opportunities available to you at Northern.
Your NMU experience will have quality classroom
experiences, but it should also include learning beyond
the classroom walls. If you haven’t checked out programs
like Superior Edge (www.nmu.edu/superioredge),
volunteer opportunities (www.nmu.edu/volunteer),
academic service learning (www.nmu.edu/asl)
or the Student Leader Fellowship (www.nmu.edu/slfp),
please do so. There are also about 300 student
organizations that can help you find ways to explore new
experiences.
Today’s economic situation might
have you feeling pessimistic about the future, but try
to keep it in perspective. The Chinese character for
threat and opportunity is nearly identical. Likewise,
today’s economic challenges can offer both risk and new
possibilities. That’s not to say that I think things are
easy right now or that you should put on rose-colored
glasses to view local, national and international
issues. If
change is going to take place – and it is – why not be
someone helping to choose the direction it goes? With
that in mind, I hope you’ll be an active participant in
campus discussions this year.
Remember, your education is something that can’t
be taken from you. It will help you remain agile and
adaptable to challenges today and in the future. You
never know what lies ahead, so maximize your
opportunities.
NMU hits two significant milestones
this year: its 110th anniversary as an
institution of higher education and the 10th
anniversary of the campus-wide technology initiative. To
me, these represent two characteristics that define NMU
as the vibrant organization it is today -- perseverance
and innovation.
When NMU celebrates its 125th
anniversary in 15 years, in what part of Northern’s
story will you have played a role? How do you think that
engagement will impact what your own future? Food for
thought.
Have a great, engaged year.
I’ll see you around campus.
Les Wong NMU President
P.S. If you haven’t purchased your
tickets for the U.S. Olympic Trials (Sept. 8-12) and
World Cup (Nov. 12-15) short track speedskating events
taking place at the Berry Events Center, you should.
With the world’s best skaters having to go through
Marquette to get to Vancouver, it will be almost as good
as going to the Olympic Winter Games.

In The News
NMU Uses E-Mail as a Primary Way of Communicating with Students
Every enrolled
student automatically receives a university network account that
provides access to instructional files and software, e-mail and
other resources.
Students are required to maintain this account
which will be used by the university to send time-critical
information to students. Northern Michigan University will use a
student’s NMU e-mail account as its primary means of
communicating official university business, including legally
required information. All NMU students are required to use
their assigned NMU e-mail accounts to receive communication from
the university. Failure to comply with this policy may result in
summary termination of enrollment by the Dean of Students.
Tuition and
Fee Billing Statements Sent
Tuition and fee rates were
set on July 17 and billing statements
are available for viewing at
https://ebill.nmu.edu. The due date for tuition, fees, room
and board was Wednesday, Aug. 12.
To assist with questions about tuition and fees and other
university issues, the NMU Information Center recently
reopened. The
center is manned by a full-time staff member and NMU
students who field telephone calls made to the Student
Service Center and Financial Aid offices.
For questions about tuition
and fees, financial aid or general “start of the semester”
matters, call 906-227-1221.
Note:
Students can access and/or pay bills on the Web at
https://ebill.nmu.edu.
Graduating
in December?
Don't Miss the Deadline!
If you are planning to
graduate at the end of the fall 2009 semester, you must
register for graduation so a final degree audit can be
completed to verify your eligibility. Register just the same way
as you would for a class online or contact the Student Service
Center [906-227-1221]. The deadline is Thursday, Aug. 27.
Every
Student Needs to File a Local Address and Phone Number
Even though NMU uses e-mail as a
primary way to communicate with students, the university still needs
an updated address and phone number. NMU faculty and staff or
classmates may try to reach students by phone or
important documents may be sent by
mail.
If you have not
given the
university your local
address, information will be
sent to your permanent address. This can result in a delay in
receiving information that is time-sensitive. (See related
article,

You can update
your local and permanent address and phone number
instantaneously on the Web at
