Conductor's Note: The graphic for this concert is a symbol which in musical terms indicates eternal rest a quarter-note rest between a pair of repeat signs. Since Requiem aeternam is the exact Latin equivalent of this, it seems fitting to use it for a program of memorial music. The original graphic is from the AIDS quilt in memory of a dancer, Arthur Conrad, and came to me from MCS member Gwen Hetler.
For centuries, the Mass for the Dead, or Requiem in the original Latin, has been a source of comfort for those who have lost a loved one. Choral composers have set the Requiem text because it is especially meaningful and heartfelt, said conductor Slotterback. Ive chosen some widely representative settings of the words from different eras to highlight the expressiveness of this text. Featured on the program will be the Requiem of Gabriel Faure, written in 1877.
Tickets will be available from Choral Society members, Lutey's Flower Shop, and at the door.
The Marquette Choral Society was founded in 1971 and has presented concerts ranging from concert standards like Handels Messiah to newly commissioned works by Dave Brubeck, Jackson Berkey, and Atso Almila.
